Earlier this year, I decided to throw my hat in the ring for the 17th Annual Strokes of Genius Competition: Best of Drawing, a competition run by Artist's Magazine and American Artist. I was delighted to learn a few months ago that my 12 x 16 inch scratchboard piece 'The Gathering' had been chosen as a Finalist, to be featured in their special magazine edition showcasing the best of drawing, and goodness am I in incredible company! Digital copies of the magazine can now be purchased here, with print copies released in early December. If you love drawing, realism and hyper-realism, indulge in a copy and prepare to be dazzled - many talented artists, their art and inspiration featured. Here's a sample of the mag, including the page featuring 'The Gathering'.
Just in case your eyeballs aren't up for the challenge of deciphering the small text blurb accompanying my artwork below, here's the artist statement:
"The initial spark of inspiration for this piece began during a hike in Eagle River, Alaska, where my family and I encountered an ancient, hollow tree that resembled a portal to another world. At the time, our daughter was four and already had a great love of animals, so—with the tree as a focal element—I started imagining the fairy version of her conversing with woodland creatures. Many reference photos from our wonderful Alaskan adventure were used to create a cohesive scene. As the composition evolved, details such as fi refl ies and a face within the tree were added to enhance depth and intrigue. While it was a challenge to create a unifi ed scene in the dappled forest light, the deeply personal connection made The Gathering a joy to create."
